EMBRACING AI IN DIGITAL MARKETING

AI in digital marketing

IT IS HARD TO ESCAPE THE TOPIC OF AI AT THE MOMENT WITH IT BEING HYPED AS THE NEXT BIG THING, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME BEING COMPLETELY TERRIFYING. SHOULD WE BE WORRIED ABOUT AI? IS IT GOING TO TAKE OUR JOBS, AND SHOULD WE BE USING THESE TOOLS? THIS ARTICLE EXPLORES AI, THE NEW AI PLATFORMS, PRACTICAL USES AND A REMINDER TO STAY SCEPTICAL!

WHAT IS AI?

AI stands for Artificial Intelligence. It refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think, learn, and perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. These tasks include understanding natural language, visual perception, decision-making, problem-solving, and more.

AI systems use various techniques, such as machine learning, deep learning, neural networks, and natural language processing, to process data, recognize patterns, and make decisions. The goal of AI is to create machines that can mimic and extend human cognitive abilities, enabling them to perform tasks more efficiently and accurately.

APPLICATIONS OF AI

We’ve all likely been exposed to and used AI ourselves on a daily basis with Siri, Google Ads, social media delivering us relevant ads, self-driving cars, algorithms within websites like YouTube, Netflix and of course gaming, virtual reality and augmented reality. So why the hype with AI now?

WHY NOW?

The catalyst for the hype is the availability, speed and huge scale of generative AI websites like large language model (LLM) Chat GPT, and AI programs like MidJourney. With their impressive and controversial abilities the LLM’s are trained on vast databases of text and images to generate new text and images in response to prompts. These models have more data, better algorithms and broad investments

PROBLEMS WITH GENERATIVE AI

Chat GPT has gained over 1.6 billion users in June alone and has sparked concern that AI will make humans redundant. However, AI is not yet good enough to fully replicate entire skillsets of humans and there are inherent problems with large language models (LLM). LLM’s are only as good as their training data, they’re foolish, biased and not factual 100% of the time! The issues of plagiarism, mis- and disinformation and discriminatory outputs are only growing in significance. Remember, don’t feed LLMs personal or private information that you wouldn’t want it to regurgitate.

PRACTICAL USES FOR AI

As marketers we know AI is not just a fad and it shouldn’t be ignored. There are many ways we can use AI tools to enhance our work, save us time and make our lives easier. Use AI for these things so that you can spend more time on strategic marketing.
